Skirting Edinburgh's centre, the Water of Leith is the defining feature of this pleasant corner of the city. Memorably characterized as a "silver thread in a ribbon of green", a walkway runs the whole 12-mile length of this short river, whose rushing waters powered the first phase of Edinburgh's own Industrial Revolution. Not far from the former mill-town of Dean Village, the Gallery of Modern Art and sister Dean Gallery sit face-to-face across Belford Road. From there, a short stroll under the soaring Dean Bridge brings you to Stockbridge - and, if you need it, an urban pit-stop. Press on downstream to reach Inverleith Park - a popular viewing area for the end-of-Festival fireworks - and, right next door, the serene Royal Botanic Gardens. The Gardens are a fine attraction in their own right, and a sought-after venue at Festival time: their shaded lawns, palm houses and pools are the perfect setting for a summer evening's play. |
