Any dedicated Fringe-goer will have many a cause to trundle over George IV Bridge - linking as it does the Royal Mile to the north, the southern Festival hub of Bristo Square, and the bustling Cowgate below. Two whole streets were destroyed to build the bridge in 1829, yet its three-hundred-metre span is all but invisible today - hidden behind the shops and houses which crowd along its sides.

Looking north along the street, you'll see the copper dome of the Bank of Scotland; turning southwards, the small Bedlam Theatre is a no less valuable landmark. On the way, you'll pass respected Fringe venue Augustine's, while Greyfriars Kirk across the road hosts choral music from the International Festival. This is, of course, also the resting-place of Edinburgh's most famous dog, Greyfriars Bobby.

Not far from the Bedlam, the striking modern Museum of Scotland marks the western end of Chambers Street. A useful link across to the city's eastern side, Chambers Street is home to the much-loved multi-storey venue known simply as C; while, round the corner on South Bridge, Old College Quad is known for its ambitious outdoor spectaculars.
