A couple of miles from Edinburgh's centre on the banks of the Firth of Forth, the port of Leith has a colourful history. Sacked by the English in 1544, occupied by France in the 1650's and traded between powerful landlords for most of its life, it's proved thoroughly worthy of its civic motto, "Persevere".

Now formally a part of Edinburgh, a new phase began for Leith when it was chosen as the post-devolution seat of Scotland's civil service. In the opening years of the new century, trendy flats and houses have sprung up everywhere around its rivers, docks and basins.

It's a long walk to Leith, but the ridiculously frequent number 22 bus zips from Princes Street in Edinburgh straight down to the waterside. Once you're there, you'll find a small collection of Fringe venues, including the historic Scotch Malt Whisky Society and the Corn Exchange Gallery.
