Area by Area | Southside |
The vast swathe of Edinburgh known as the Southside is a step too far for much of the Festival crowd. At the northern boundary, the vast playing field known as the Meadows is the limit of most visitors' range - whether they're on their way to the big tops which park up near Melville Drive, or gorging on the one-day feast that is Fringe Sunday. To the south-west of the Meadows lies Morningside, mocked as the home of the blue-rinse set but in reality a diverse and vibrant community. The newly-refurbished Church Hill Theatre nestles here, alongside a handful of commercial galleries. Moving east from Morningside, there's little in Marchmont to attract a Festival fan, while Sciennes - say it "Sheens" - is largely residential. It all picks up again once you get to Newington, a land of shops, pubs and takeaways with easy connections to the Pleasance and back into town. |
