FringeGuru's review of this venue

Halfway down George IV Bridge, Augustine's - or more properly, the Augustine United Church - is an unmistakable city landmark. Completed in 1861 but only recently restored, its idiosyncratic, tiered octagonal tower is at last revealed in all its glory, after literally years hidden behind scaffolding.

This no-nonsense venue has few bells and whistles, but sports two high-quality performance spaces. The larger is the sanctuary, which is built inside the church proper: you wouldn't know that to look at it though, as a bank of temporary seating and the addition of black drapes convert it to a large, impressive theatre. The Sanctuary's a favourite hang-out of student and youth theatre companies, hosting musicals, light-hearted theatre and the occasional heavyweight play.

The smaller studio, downstairs, has a more church-hall feel, with rows of plastic seats on shallow steps in front of a raised stage. The view from the back isn't all that great, and there are a couple of spectacularly unfortunately-placed pillars. But it's a cool, spacious and comfortable venue, much used by amateur dramatic companies - many of which are of admirable quality.

Eating and drinking at this venue

A small selection of drinks and sandwiches is on offer in the foyer, but you'll do better to use one of the numerous alternatives on George IV Bridge outside.
