Bedlam Theatre is Fringe venue number 49 Its address is 11B Bristo Place, Edinburgh EH1 1EZ, which is in the George IV Bridge and Chambers Street area of the city. See a map of this area. The venue's website is www.bedlamfringe.co.uk - but you cannot book tickets online through this website. The box office telephone number is FringeGuru's review of this venueThe small but perfectly-formed Bedlam Theatre is used year-round by students from nearby Edinburgh University - notably for Improverts, the improvised comedy show which has run continuously at Bedlam for a staggering 18 years. At the heart of a cluster of temporary venues, the Bedlam is a reminder of the benefits of a real theatre. Sound and lighting are impeccable, when the lights go out it really is dark, and the seats are plush and spacious. Noise from the street outside can be a problem, but the overall effect is of a much-loved, old-fashioned, small-town cinema - just with live actors instead of a screen. Improverts is still in residence during the Fringe, but the theatre also plays host to a range of visiting companies - ranging from children's shows through comedy to the darkest of tragedy. It's hard to pin the venue down to an artistic style; so wherever your preferences lie, it's worth taking a look at the chalkboards outside as you pass by. Eating and drinking at this venueThere is a small café-bar inside the theatre, but it struggles to cope with Festival-time crowds. To be honest, you'll do better to get your nosebag out on George IV Bridge, or at the cluster of larger venues at nearby Bristo Square.
