FringeGuru's review of this venue

Before we get down to the details of C SoCo, let's explain that mystifying moniker. It may look like an accident with some Alphabetti Spaghetti, but in fact it's a much-too-clever reference to the site's geography. Linking the SOuth Bridge with the COwgate below, SoCo is destined for great things: this whole area, devastated by 2002's Old Town Fire, is slated for a new urban complex filled with apartments and arts spaces.

Until then, friendly neighbours C Venues are in temporary charge of a soon-to-be-demolished office block, which they fill for the Festival with a range of performance areas. Some are standard theatres - albeit distinctly improvised ones - in the middle of a vacant floor; others are more distinctive, occupying some forgotten corner of the derelict building. But with the whole venue spanning seven storeys from base to apex, you may remember SoCo best for its sheer, relentless, lung-busting verticality.

For all practical purposes, SoCo's a part of the main C venue at Adam House: it's right next door, connected by an internal passage, and even shares C's box office. The decision to give it a separate title might reflect the different programming policy holding sway in this temporary venue. With no shortage of space to play with, C lets its performers' imaginations run wild - and in 2007, plaudits were heaped on several unusual shows which made unique use of its run-down rooms and passageways.

For no very obvious reason, the bottom level of SoCo - an outdoor courtyard opening onto the Cowgate - goes under a separate venue number as C SoCo Urban Garden.

Eating and drinking at this venue

The eclectic Broadway Bar (sponsored by Festival review website Broadway Baby) is an oasis of cool, thanks to the open window which looks up Blair Street towards Hunter Square; the seats in the alcove overlooking the view are particularly coveted. The bar itself is fairly limited, though. For a wider selection, head to the main C bar next door - you're allowed to bring drinks from the C bar back here.

Understanding ticket purchasing options

You have different options at different locations shown on this map.

This venue:  You can buy tickets in person, or pick up tickets you've pre-booked through the venue's telephone line (0845 260 1234) or website (www.cthefestival.com).  You cannot collect tickets you booked through the Fringe box office at the venue.

Other venues in this venue chain:  You have the same options as you do at the venue itself.

Venues in allied chains:  You can buy tickets in person.  Under some circumstances you can also buy tickets from allied venues over the phone, but FringeGuru recommends it is simpler to make telephone bookings directly with the venue itself.

Fringe central box offices:  You can buy tickets in person at the Fringe box office, or using free self-service Internet terminals at the e-ticket tent.  At either location, you can also pick up tickets you've pre-booked from the Fringe box office (0131 226 0000) or website (www.edfringe.com).  Tickets booked through the Fringe box office or website cannot be collected from the venue - only from the central box offices shown.  WARNING: FringeGuru currently recommends you DO NOT BUY from the central box office - click here to find out why.
