FringeGuru's review of this venue

Based at Adam House on Chambers Street, five minutes' walk from both the Royal Mile and Bristo Square, the headquarters of the ever-expanding C venues chain is known simply as C. This impressive venue occupies all five floors of the mock-Georgian building, which - for all its columns and carvings - is little more than 50 years old.

C's four theatres were all created (more or less) equal: there are no tiny cellars or cramped attics here. What's more, despite a varied and often adventurous programme, C seems to have the knack of picking winners to fill them. It all adds up to a safe, reliable place to see a show, whatever your particular choice of genre.

The performance spaces

The four performance spaces in C are stacked on top of each other, and numbered according to the floor they occupy. Down in the basement, C-1 is a proper theatre, with arch, curtain and bronzes on the walls; you're in trouble if a tall person sits in front of you, but otherwise it's a great place to watch a show.

The ground floor is filled by the bar. C+1 and C+2 on the two floors above are large, plain performance spaces, with black cloth drapes around all the walls ensuring there are no distractions from what's on stage; both spaces have raked seating, so every seat has a good view.

Up top at C+3, things are a little different - the largest of C's theatres, the seats are arranged in a horseshoe around three sides of the stage. Performers in C+3 will have designed their show to work in that space, but those sitting at the extremities of the horseshoe are still likely to find themselves watching some of the action from behind. It's best not to arrive at the last moment to pick a seat for this one.

Eating and drinking at this venue

C's ground-floor bar is, to tell the truth, a bit disappointing. It's large, has a good range of drinks and is fine for grabbing something to take into a show, but the atmosphere is just a little institutional. Upstairs outside C+2, the smaller foyer bar is worth a look if the main one's crowded.

Where to get tickets for this venue

Here's where you can buy tickets for this venue.  See below the map for a key.

Understanding ticket purchasing options

You have different options at different locations shown on this map.

This venue:  You can buy tickets in person, or pick up tickets you've pre-booked through the venue's telephone line (0845 260 1234) or website (www.cthefestival.com).  You cannot collect tickets you booked through the Fringe box office at the venue.

Other venues in this venue chain:  You have the same options as you do at the venue itself.

Venues in allied chains:  You can buy tickets in person.  Under some circumstances you can also buy tickets from allied venues over the phone, but FringeGuru recommends it is simpler to make telephone bookings directly with the venue itself.

Fringe central box offices:  You can buy tickets in person at the Fringe box office, or using free self-service Internet terminals at the e-ticket tent.  At either location, you can also pick up tickets you've pre-booked from the Fringe box office (0131 226 0000) or website (www.edfringe.com).  Tickets booked through the Fringe box office or website cannot be collected from the venue - only from the central box offices shown.  WARNING: FringeGuru currently recommends you DO NOT BUY from the central box office - click here to find out why.
