FringeGuru's review of this venue

The bright and modern Dance Base, Scotland's year-round national centre for dance, runs a modest but respected Festival programme of international-quality shows. The small gate onto the Grassmarket gives little clue to the massive facility waiting at the top of the stairs: the theatre itself, modern and draped with black cloth, gives a particularly impressive sense of space.

The audience, on the other hand, is kept small, and sits of half-a-dozen rows of chairs on shallow steps. The heads of the people in front of you can get in the way when the dancers are performing floor work, so do your best to get a seat in the front row.

Unusually for a Fringe venue, Dance Base rotates its programme, so performances happen at a different time each day. While this means you can catch any of the shows even if you're on a limited schedule, it also means you need to be particularly careful when planning to watch a performance there.

Eating and drinking at this venue

The small cheerful café, found at the end of the rough-walled corridor to the left of the performance space, serves good tea and coffee and a few sweet treats. Cold drinks and snacks are available from the vending machines.
