St Cecilia's is Fringe venue number 31 Its address is Niddry Street, Cowgate Edinburgh EH1 1LJ , which is in the Grassmarket and Cowgate area of the city. See a map of this area. The venue's website is www.festivals.ed.ac.uk - but you cannot book tickets online through this website. The box office telephone number is FringeGuru's review of this venueBuilt in the 1760's and named after the patron saint of musicians, St Cecilia's Hall proudly trumpets its status as the oldest concert hall still in use in Scotland. It's a slightly cheeky claim, as the building's hosted music for barely a quarter of its life; other uses included a school, Masonic hall, furniture store and - horror of horrors - a pub. The venue's current incarnation owes its existence to two benefactors, Raymond Russell and Rodger Mirrey, and their donations of early keyboard instruments to Edinburgh University. Even if you've no particular interest in the history of music, it's worth a half-hour mooch through the extensive collections: they're open before and after performances, and daily (except Sundays) from 10:30 to 12:30. Friendly staff are happy to open up the less delicate instruments, to give you a good view of how the keyboards "work". Downstairs, display cases house the separate Anne Macaulay Collection of Plucked Stringed Instruments. Recitals are held in the austerely elegant, pale-green concert hall, whose intimate size and unusual oval shape are said to provide perfect acoustics for the collection. Most of the audience sits on rows of chairs facing the stage - though some aficionados claim the acoustics are better for those on the padded benches along the sides. Eating and drinking at this venueCoffee and cake is served during the interval, among the Plucked Stringed Instruments downstairs.
