FringeGuru's review of this venue

Offshoot of the much-respected Hill Street Theatre, the newish Universal Arts Theatre gloriously occupies the Grand Lodge of Scotland, slap-bang between the Assembly Rooms and the Book Festival in Edinburgh's New Town.

The Masonic hall itself hosts the larger performance space, Majestic. The conversion to a theatre sadly hides much of the grandeur, but there are plenty of details to enjoy while waiting for the hall to fill: busts in niches, torches on the walls, Masonic insignia in the centre and, above it all, a magnificent glassy dome. The stage is huge, but the venue still manages a surprisingly intimate feel.

The second space, Mysterious, is down in the basement. The tiled approach corridor is perhaps too reminiscent of a public bath - but the room itself is another large, grand space, all fancy carving and wooden pillars. The stage is quite shallow, so not everyone gets a great view of the action; if it's busy, try the back half of the room, where the seats are gently banked to give sightlines over the forest of heads.

Eating and drinking at this venue

The tiny bar round the back of the box office is fine for grabbing a drink to take into the show. For anything else, head out onto George Street.
