FringeGuru's review of this venue

The deeply unpromising approach to The Vault - under the arch, just by the bins, opposite the building site and past the prison vans serving the Sherriff Court - continues into the foyer, with its plain whitewashed walls and concrete floor. Once you're through the entranceway, though, your impression of the venue will transform. Within the vault hides a tiny, intimate performance space, whose recent conversion leaves it brim-full of atmosphere and, yes, elegance.

Making imaginative use of the space available, the stage is tucked away under an arch; it's a nice detail, but a few of the seats do have a slightly constrained view, so it's best not to be the very last in the queue for this one. Mercifully, the soundproofing fends off the noise from outside. And, as a year-round performance space, The Vault benefits from proper cinema-style seating - albeit with legroom which would make a budget airline squirm.

As its name suggests, The Vault is contained in the undercroft of Augustine United Church, and it's the sister venue of Augustine's upstairs. But thanks to the strange layout of this part of Edinburgh, the entrances are a few minutes' walk apart; you can peek down on The Vault from the bridge at Augustine's, but getting there involves a detour by Candlemaker Row.

Eating and drinking at this venue

The venue's programme says there's a café on-site, but we didn't see one when we visited last year. We'll update this review once we've had a chance to check.
