We've seen Hove resident, Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer, at several cabaret nights around Brighton. His offbeat musical stylings almost always prove the hit of the evening; so the promise of a full-length Mr B show is a pure delight. The idea of a traditional chap, complete with moustache, spats and the patter, rapping along with his ukulele accompaniment might not seem freshly funny. But Mr B lifts this idea above its stale-sounding origins by really knowing his stuff; his hip-hop parodies are more than simple giggles at the codger trying to be cool. He clearly loves this music, and produces his songs in the gap between two colliding worlds, which – as with all the best parodies – reveals new views of the subject matter by glimpsing them from an oblique angle. We've got our cricket bats crossed that he plays his wonderful lament, Timothy, about Tim Westwood… who, when at school with Mr B, "never used to talk like that". |
