Magic’s moved on since we all watched Paul Daniels on TV, and this year’s Fringe programme offers more than its fair share of show-boating illusionists.  But in the escalating race for more blinding flashes, more thumping music and more death-defying stunts, it’s easy to sense that something’s been lost... to feel nostalgic for the gentler pleasures of yesteryear.

Morgan and West

So step forward, Rhys Morgan and Rob West, whose own contribution to the magic of the Fringe is filled with olde-worlde charm.  We stumbled upon Morgan and West at the tail-end of last year’s Festival – on a FringeGuru knees-up, if the truth be told – and were instantly won over by their light-hearted, top-hatted, Victorian-parlour style.

To be fair, these young performers are at the start of their careers, and we worked out afterwards how most of the tricks were done.  But that was all part of the fun – and the pair’s easy-going patter lent a fresh twist to even the best-known stage-magic staples.  Unthreatening, uncomplicated and a simple joy to watch, we’re looking forward to seeing these classical conjurers work their magic once again.
