Edinburgh Academy
Comedy
7 - 21 Aug (not 8, 11, 15), 7:00pm (8:00pm); 8, 15, 22 Aug, 4:00pm (5:00pm); 11 Aug, 3:00pm (4:00pm)

One of the few genuine Fringe institutions, musical double-act Kit and the Widow are back again for an astonishing 27th year.  With Kit providing the vocals and the oddly-named Widow on the piano, there's one obvious way to summarize their act: step forward, the successors to Flanders and Swann.

Laughing Horse @ Jekyll & Hyde (venue website)
Comedy
5 - 22, 26 - 29 Aug, 3:40pm (4:25pm)

It’s a real comedy wildcard, this one – but if you’re tired of the slick sameness of the TV big names, then Matthew Highton’s surreal wanderings might just be for you.  We first caught his act down at the Brighton Fringe, when our reviewer Mathilde Madden dropped in more or less at random… but came out dubbing this young comedian nothing less than a “star on the rise”.

Assembly @ George Street (venue website)
Comedy
23 Aug, 7:25pm (8:25pm); 18 - 30 Aug, 8:55pm (9:55pm)

Having seen him perform several times at The Stand prior to his Fringe debut last year, we were in no doubt that Kevin Bridges was destined for big things.  With a hit show in 2009 and a seemingly non-stop year afterwards, Bridges is back in Edinburgh, at Assembly, bringing his killer observations and distinctively Scottish outlook with him.
