I'm thrilled to see that Tap Ole is coming back to Edinburgh.  I almost literally stumbled upon it last year, when a chance encounter sent me into C on Chambers Street at the right moment for the show.  And, oh, what a happy coincidence that meeting turned out to be.

The idea behind the show is as simple as it's creative: fuse Spanish guitar, not with flamenco, but with tap dancing instead.  It proves to be a glorious combination, with the energetic passion of the Spanish music perfectly complementing the breathtaking speed and skill of the dance.  And what's so great about this concept is that it stands up on its own: there was no back-story, no fuss and no gimmickry - just four performers, two guitars and two pairs of tap shoes.

And don't be concerned that the appeal might fade by the time the show's hour and ten minutes is through.  The choreography, at times playful, at times passionate, is ever-changing; new and unexpected elements are brought in with every fresh number.  A particular highlight was the atmospheric sand dance, where the dancer's tap shoes - wired for sound - grind through the sand in an ever-changing soundscape: first sharp and angry, later soothing and smooth.

They brought the audience in too, with the most joyous and successful participation routine I can ever remember being part of.  Cleverly and seemingly effortlessly, the on-stage performers used gestures and encouragement to teach the assembled crowd an increasingly complex routine of claps and shouts - which we then performed in accompaniment to a solo dancer.

It was awe-inspiring, it was exhilarating, and for the first I can remember at the Fringe, when it ended I leapt to my feet for a standing ovation.  It's back this year for a few days only, in a bigger and better venue.  This will be a hot ticket - tap on down to the box office when you can.
