“The Fantastic Francis Harvey – Faith Healer – One night only”.  The poster bearing this legend screams out on the almost-bare stage, and its appearance in all scenes binds together the fates of Faith Healer’s three characters – and their painful, burning memories.

Undoubtedly one of the gems of the Edinburgh International Festival this year, Mabou Mines’ New York ensemble of actors, puppeteers and musicians created a profoundly magical show on the stage of the Lyceum Theatre - bringing tears to the eyes of many in the adult audience.

Set in a finishing school in the 1920s, The Boy Friend follows Madame Dubonnet and her pupils on the day of the Carnival Ball. At first glance, Superclump could very easily be classed as such a sketch show and, to be fair, it does tick nearly all of these conventional boxes. But what helps it stand apart and stand out as a truly great show is the quality of writing and performance.

Alexis Dubus: A R*ddy Brief History Of Swearing

We all love to swear, there's no denying it. As an expression of passion, anger or vehemence, there is nothing better - but I'm supposed to keep this review "clean", otherwise I'd be both cursing and passionately supporting Alexis Dubus in equal measure. While it's great subject matter, and Dubus' style and performance are appealing, the material is very hit-and-miss; Dubus is delightfully friendly and cheeky, but the show is a little sloppy, and could do with trimming and reworking.
