Sun, sea and shows: stage set for Brighton in May
Published on Monday, 21 March 2011

As winter loosens its grip, all eyes are turning to the South Coast, where the country's second-biggest arts gathering will take place in Brighton this May.  Alongside the popular "official" Festival, the Brighton Festival Fringe celebrates its 5th birthday this year - with a 600-show programme featuring acts from across the city, and around the world.

Brighton PavilionA skim through the programme confirms Brighton's burgeoning status, as it develops into a serious rival to the famous Edinburgh Fringe.  There's a visible growth in the comedy programme, with many performers taking the chance of an early try-out before their Edinburgh run.  Theatre's well-represented too - making the most of Brighton's extensive network of small venues, many of which operate all year round.  Visitors and locals alike can find out more about the city through a busy schedule of tours, and Brighton's distinctive local culture is well-represented too, with a bustling cabaret programme lighting up the night.

Getting the Fringe programme

The Fringe programme's now on the streets, and widely available across Brighton and Hove.  The Dome box office on New Road is just one place you can pick it up.  If you're in London, you can also grab a copy at selected stores; there's information about this on the Fringe website.

If you'd rather go paper-free, all the listings are available online, again through the Fringe's own website.  And if you're a smartphone user, you'll soon be able to download iFringe, our ground-breaking app for Android and iPhone.

Ready to book?  At this stage, the online route's probably best - you'll get a handy e-ticket by email, eliminating the need to visit a box office before you head for the show.  But if you prefer the human touch, you can call 01273 917 272 or call into the Dome box office in the city centre.

FringeGuru at the Brighton Fringe

We're pleased to say we'll be expanding our coverage of the Brighton Fringe this year, starting with extensive previews throughout April.  Each day, we'll be picking one highlight show, personally chosen by our editors.  And when May comes, we'll be reviewing across the city, helping you pick the very best shows at this year's Fringe.  We hope we'll see you in Brighton this May!
