Second chance for fireworks tickets
Published on Monday, 18 July 2011

Bank of Scotland Fireworks Concert, Sunday 4 September, 9pm

Today's a red-letter day here at Ticket Alert, as the Edinburgh International Festival releases the second batch of tickets for its famous end-of-Festival fireworks concert.  This isn't quite your last chance for these passes - there'll be another release on 3 September - but it's the easiest of the remaining options; this batch of tickets are on sale online, while September's quota involves a lengthy wait in the notorious fireworks queue.

This year's display is on Sunday 4 September, when to live orchestral accompaniment, upwards of 100,000 pyrotechnics go up in the air in an intense 45-minute show.  Despite the refinement of the classical music, there's little subtle about the display: crescendo builds upon crescendo towards an impossible, light-drenched finale.

Trust us, you wouldn't want to miss this literally earth-shaking event.  But whether you need tickets is another question again; as we explain in our article on the fireworks, you can get a wonderful view of the display from many places around the city, without planning ahead and without spending any money at all.  Tickets are priced at a modest £12.50 - but only you can decide whether it's worth the money for a ringside seat.

The show starts as the sun sets, and brings the curtain down on the Festival a little before 10pm.  There's only one type of ticket on sale now, granting general admission to Princes Street Gardens, and there's a limit of four per customer.  This batch of tickets is only available online - so to be in with a chance, be on the International Festival's website at 10am on Monday.

Previous years' experience suggests these tickets will go quickly, so get online as soon as you can.  But if you head to the website early, don't worry that it's currently saying "Sold Out" - we assume that will change once the second release of tickets appears.

Wondering what's happened to the Tattoo?  Traditionally, its preview tickets went on sale on the same day as the fireworks.  But this year they've staggered their launches, so Tattoo sales will open a week from now.

Don't stop at these two major events - the box offices are now open for all of Edinburgh's August Festivals.  Literally millions of tickets are still available.  Catch up on all this year's ticket news.
