Ten years at the hub of the Festival
Monday, 06 July 2009

It's ten years to the day since The Hub, headquarters of the "official" Edinburgh International Festival, opened its doors.  A towering presence on the Royal Mile, the Hub's become an equal landmark on Edinburgh's cultural scene - and an invaluable source of information for visitors and residents alike.

The HubBuilt in the 1820's for the Church of Scotland, and once glorying in the name of the Highland Tolbooth St John's, the Hub's remarkable conversion to an arts centre is a beacon of how such things should be done.  Its impressive (if garish) main hall makes a fine, intimate setting for music and drama, and we admit we've got a weak spot for the terrace cafe downstairs.  Also in the building, Hub Tickets - the International Festival's box office - is notable for its professional and knowledgeable staff.

It's commendable, too, that the Hub's so willing to share its glory with the city's other Festivals.  It's the definitive one-stop shop for all your brochure needs: pop into its foyer at almost any time of day to pick up programmes from the Fringe, Book Festival, and Jazz and Blues.  In fact, pretty much any event that's running in Edinburgh will have a leaflet there, making The Hub an obligatory first stop if you're visiting the Festival this year.

Happy birthday to the Hub from FringeGuru... and our best wishes for another ten successful years.
