Over the years we’ve been reviewing in Brighton, we’ve grown to respect locally-based Wired.  They take theatre out of the theatre, into flats and houses around the city; but their inventive narratives use the building as a backdrop, never letting the setting overpower the play.  This year sees the return of Gone But Not Forgotten, which they first performed back in 2006, and we’ve high hopes for another fascinating adventure in unconventional storytelling.

Originally written for a festival celebrating older age, Gone But Not Forgotten evokes memories from the house’s fictional past – telling the story of its elderly owner, who now confronts the need to leave and start again.  It sounds a little twee, perhaps, but Wired aren’t afraid to defy expectations and we predict a few surprises.  The programme blurb refers to a dog, “gentleman callers” and, er, handcuffs; and if they stick to their trademark style, there’ll be a mystery to solve, as we piece together the jigsaw of a story from a series of cameo scenes.

It all sounds pleasantly reminiscent of Above Below, which we four-starred in a genteel seafront townhouse a couple of years ago.  That play was “slow-burning and gently compelling”, we wrote, with colourful acting and moments of tenderness alongside a menacing plot.  Of course, we can’t guarantee an equal success this time… but we’re looking forward to finding out what secrets this particular house holds.
