We’ve seen Chris Dangerfield take his place in a number of ensemble shows over the last couple of years, and have to admit to being intrigued as to what his first solo hour will bring. Part man, part prancing peacock, charismatic Dangerfield is one to watch, and has been attracting attention for his Edinburgh show thanks to a “sponsorship” deal from a local escort agency.

Dangerfield is an acquired taste of an act. Unashamedly filthy and daringly honest, his material is pitch-dark, but even when he dances around the most taboo of topics the butt of the joke is always Dangerfield himself. It’s a trick a many established acts, who play around with the risky material and find it repels audiences, could stand to learn.

Dangerfield is also a triumph of style over substance. Yes, he is firmly on the dark side – but so far, we haven’t seen that much material, or many solid jokes from this well-dressed comic. And while he’s thoroughly entertaining with his posturing and preening and outlandish claims, such is his showmanship, we can’t help wondering if this can sustain an hour. But we’re secretly hoping that Dangerfield will rise to the occasion and put our fears to rest.
