Knightmare Live |

Welcome, watchers of illusion, to the castle of confusion. If you grew up in the right decade, the very name Knightmare may be enough to send you side-stepping to the box office – eager to recapture the innocent fantasies of a simpler, more wide-eyed age. But if, on the other hand, you weren’t a teenager in the early nineties… then perhaps we’d better explain. Groundbreaking in its day, cult TV game show Knightmare saw a blindfolded “Dungeoneer” undertake an epic quest through a virtual-reality world, guided by fellow team-members and a portentously riddling dungeon master. As an affectionate (and authorised) pastiche of the series, Knightmare Live promises to swap the lure of technology for the magic of the theatre – recreating the three levels of the Knightmare castle in solid form on stage, and enlisting a panel of Fringe comedians to supervise the search for treasure. Along the way we’re promised brain-teasing riddles, elaborately-built sets, massive puppets and, yes, that infamous corridor of blades. Recapturing the joy of the TV original won’t be an easy task, of course, and we all know the adage about never trying to go back. So will it be “ooh, nasty”, or will they be spellcasting F-U-N? It’s hard to be sure, but one thing’s certain: we simply can’t wait to find out. |
