Despite his role as the eponymous “naughty boy” in The Life Of Brian, the late Graham Chapman arguably remains the least-known of the Monty Python crew. In this one-man show – which impressed us on its debut run at the 2011 Buxton Fringe – the versatile George Telfer tells Chapman’s personal story, playing an array of characters to probe below the surface and deliver some true revelations for even the best-read of Python fans.

There’s not much in the title that gives away the bawdy nature of this playful look at Tudor history - and probably some of the audience weren’t aware of quite what they’d signed up for. Expect lots of cross-dressing, dirty jokes, funny songs… and even a nod to Kraftwork thrown in for good measure. This play within a play was very funny in places, and worked well as a not-too-accurate frolic back in time.

I have seen a remarkable number of apparently extremely important social and political pieces on offer in this year's Fringe programme. And I've sat through no small number of them myself. However, it is still refreshing to see some old-school theatre activism from a university company. As a play, it has a few flaws, but it also shows a lot of promise; there's quite a bit of new writing among this year's offerings, and this one holds its own as a proud example of what Scottish university students can achieve.

There’s a dignified simplicity to this two-man play, embodied first of all by its sparse, plain-white set. With toppled columns surrounding a broken church window, it instantly conveys a sense of both time and context: we’re in the reign of Henry VIII, during the dissolution of the monasteries, witnessing the end of a centuries-old way of life. Where Late The Sweet Birds Sang proves a surprisingly funny and unexpectedly saucy play – a monastic sit-com, with a few elements of Carry On thrown in. Beneath the humour, though, lies an ever-present undertone of impending separation and loss.

Once upon a time in a little village, there lived two brothers – and Grimm Ever After is their story. This delightful little play imagines how the ideas and inspiration for their tales literally came to the brothers Grimm. We follow them deep into the forest, where they meet a host of familiar characters and help them find their "happy ever afters".

A musical about a musical, about snakes, on a plane. In a tiny room. This is as crazy as it sounds: the plot is bizarre, the cast minimal and the scenery as good as your imagination can make it. Just three actors and a lot of enthusiasm play the roles of a full-cast 'West End musical', in a lively performance that’s sure to have you laughing hard.

I'm always a little wary of topical shows at the Fringe – but a satire on the BBC starring Phil Jupitius, Hal Cruttenden and Sara Pascoe seemed too good an opportunity to pass up. And judging by the packed theatre at Pleasance One, there were a lot of people thinking the same. This is by the same company who wrote last year's popular (and very similar) play Coalition, and after this fiasco of a year for the Beeb, it’s natural to move on to a production that pokes vicious fun at its controversies. Making News duly provides a lot of very intellectual laughter.

Squally Showers uses over-the-top dance, hideous mullet wigs and excellent music, to create a camp caricature of the 80s. Set in a television company, it’s partially a satire, and partially a playful tribute to the spirit of the decade. There’s no need to add that this isn’t for the faint-hearted or cynically-minded. This is Fringe regular Little Bulb Theatre back on quirky form.
