A dark psychological thriller with overtones of classic horror, Shadow On Their Wall arrives in Edinburgh after an acclaimed run at last year's Buxton Fringe. Often surprising and sometimes heart-stopping, it's a tensely thoughtful analysis of one man's encounter with his demons – told through a conversation with his psychologist, interleaved with poignant recollections of days gone by.

When we reviewed the show in Buxton, playwright JJ Fletcher's script impressed us with its candour and quiet dignity. A powerful account of a headteacher's descent into darkness, it offered an alarming yet compassionate insight into how the same thing could happen to any of us. Filled with well-paced revelations, it touched on a few of life’s big truths: the pain of loss, the awful knowledge of the things we bring on ourselves, and the fact that the simplest memories can be the most beautiful ones.

Such a tense one-hander should suit the intimate theatre at The Vault, and we're hoping actor Gareth Watkins will reprise the compelling performance he gave in Buxton. It’s a short play – just 40 minutes – but that’s reflected in the ticket price, so don’t hesitate to experience this taut partnership between a talented actor and a haunting script.
