The Great Scottish Santa Run

Sunday 13 December, 11am (participant registration from 9am)

Princes Street Gardens, starts at Ross Bandstand

Free to watch; £10 (adults) / £5 (under 12) to enter. Details below.

It's brilliant, it's bonkers and of course, it's for charity. It's the Great Scottish Santa Run, which will see thousands of red-suited Father Christmas impersonators jog, trot or stroll their way around Princes Street Gardens - all on a mission to make poorly children's wishes come true.

The emphasis of the surreal event is firmly on fun, and the mile-long course should be doable by even the most stereotypically portly of Santas. Needless to say, Mother Christmases are equally welcome... and Santa's little helpers (age 11 and under) can take part in a Christmas hat, with a promise of a medal from the real Santa at the end.

It's all in aid of When You Wish Upon A Star, a charity which works year-round to make seriously ill children's wishes come true. At Christmas time, the charity flies four planes out to meet the big guy in Lapland, each full of children with life-threatening illnesses from right across the UK.

In accordance with our policy on promoting charitable events, FringeGuru verified on 14 November 2009 that When You Wish Upon A Star is a registered English charity and is up-to-date on filings with the English Charity Commission.

Entering the Santa Run

Entry costs £10 for adults and £5 for under-12s. On top of the entry fee, you're asked to raise sponsorship for the charity.

The good news is that you don't need your own Santa suit, as you'll be given a one-size-fits-all model at the starting gate.  (Under-12's get a Christmas hat instead.)  The bad news is that, to pick up your outfit, you need to get to Princes Street early - registration opens at 9am.

You'll need to buy your place in the race in good time to receive your entry voucher through the post. Online and postal entry forms are on the Santa Run web site.
