Edinburgh '09 Previews

We're getting ready for the Edinburgh Festival 2009!  We've been poring over the 2,000 shows coming to the city this year, and we've picked out our favourites from this year's programmes.  These are the shows our reviewing team are inking into their own Festival diaries.  So, who knows - perhaps we'll see you there!

Piff-Tacular - Free
Published on Wednesday, 17 June 2009

Laughing Horse @ The Hive
6 - 30 Aug (not 17), 6:00pm (7:00pm)

Oh my goodness, what are we doing?  We're recommending a conjuring show.  Performed by a man in a dragon suit.  Who calls himself Piff, has a mind-reading fish... and according to the Fringe programme, suffers from a "penchant for princesses".  Have we taken leave of our minds?

The Underbelly
6 - 30 Aug (not 17), 9:05pm (10:35pm)

The World @ St George's West
6 - 31 Aug, 9:00pm (10:10pm)

We discovered the Capoeira Knights at the tail-end of last year's Fringe, performing in the multicultural epicentre which is The World @ St George's West.  Back in the same venue for another three-week run, we're expecting the boys from Brazil to pick up where they left off - with samba, back-flips, muscle and soul.

Barbershopera II
Published on Saturday, 13 June 2009

Pleasance Dome
5 - 31 Aug (not 12, 19), 10:45pm (11:45pm)

We're delighted to see the return of Barbershopera - the show we liked so much in 2008, we chose it for our own company night out on the Fringe.  Yes, it's a barbershop quartet; yes, it's (kind-of) an opera; and yes, the four singers' technical skills are truly superb.  More than all that though... this show is screamingly funny.
