An un-lovely pair of parallel roads striking south out of town, Nicolson Street and the Pleasance nonetheless host their fair share of flagship venues, with both the "official" International Festival and the free-wheeling Fringe plying their trade nearby.

The main draw on Nicolson Street is the glass-fronted Edinburgh Festival Theatre, spiritual home base of the Edinburgh International Festival. Further south - where, confusingly, the road changes name to Clerk Street - the venerable Queen's Hall is much loved by locals, while the imposing converted church which is Zoo Southside forms a striking landmark between the two.

One street to the east, all roads lead to the Pleasance Courtyard, the Fringe's original mega-venue and still its single largest performance site. A few minutes' walk further south, the original Zoo venue completes the Fringe line-up.
